# Types of Roofing Services

The types of roofing services we offer: repair, replacement, and inspection with maintenance, for shingle, tile, metal and flat roofs.

**There are three types of roofing services: repairs, replacements and inspections with maintenance.** Which one you need depends on whether the problem is local or roof-wide, and the roof material (shingle, tile, metal or flat) decides how the work is done. Global Green Roofing offers all three in Los Angeles, CA. Not sure which applies? Start with an inspection.

- **A leak on a sound roof:** [roof repair](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-repair/), or the [tile](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/tile-roof-repair/) and [flat roof](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/flat-roof-repair/) versions.
- **Widespread wear or repeated leaks:** [roof replacement](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-replacement/).
- **Not sure, buying, selling or planning solar:** [roof inspection and maintenance](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-inspection/), with drone photos of slopes that cannot be walked.
- **Also offered:** commercial roofs, tile lift and relay, standing-seam and stone-coated steel, and solar panel removal and reinstall during a [re-roof](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-replacement/).

## Types of roofing services, by the job

Find your roof type across the top and the job down the side; each cell opens the page for that exact job:

| Type of work | Shingle | Tile | Metal | Flat or low-slope |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Repair | [Roof Repair](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-repair/) | [Tile Roof Repair](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/tile-roof-repair/) | [Roof Repair](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-repair/) | [Flat Roof Repair](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/flat-roof-repair/) |
| Replace or install | [Roof Replacement](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-replacement/) | [Tile Roofing](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/tile-roofing/) | [Metal Roofing](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/metal-roofing/) | [Flat Roofing](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/flat-roofing/) |

For every roof type, [roof inspection and maintenance](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/roof-inspection/) covers the check-ups, and [cool roofing](https://globalgreenroofing.com/our-services/cool-roofing/) covers the reflective version of each covering. Repair pages are split by roof type because the work is different: a tile leak can start in the underlayment under intact tiles (the Tile Roofing Industry Alliance calls the underlayment "critical to the success of the roof system"), and a flat roof leak is a membrane or drainage problem that shingle methods cannot fix.

## Roofing materials compared: shingle, tile, metal and flat

The material follows the roof's slope and the house. Flat and low-slope roofs take a membrane such as TPO; on a pitched roof the choice is mostly shingle, tile or metal. Weight decides whether the framing needs checking, because the roof structure has to carry the new covering (California Residential Code R908.2):

| Material | Fits | Weight per 100 sq ft (manufacturer data) | Service life, as published | Fire rating |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Architectural asphalt shingles | Pitched roofs; costs less upfront than metal (Metal Roofing Alliance) | About 200 to 225 lb | About 20 years (National Association of Home Builders, 2007) | Most assemblies Class A (Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association) |
| Concrete tile | Pitched roofs of 2.5:12 or steeper (R905.3) | About 900 to 970 lb standard, 550 to 720 lb lightweight | Over 50 years for clay and concrete (NAHB, 2007) | Class A as a rated assembly |
| Clay barrel tile | The same slope rule; Spanish and Mediterranean styles | About 800 to 900 lb | Over 50 years (NAHB, 2007) | Class A as a rated assembly |
| Standing-seam steel | Pitched roofs; solar clamps onto the seams | About 130 to 150 lb (painted 24 gauge) | 30 to 50+ years (Metal Roofing Alliance) | Most Class A as a tested assembly (Metal Roofing Alliance) |
| Membrane (TPO and others) | Flat and low-slope roofs | Varies by system | Depends on the seams and detailing | Class A only as a tested assembly |

Tile is the one that changes the structure: standard concrete tile weighs about four times as much as shingles. On an existing tile roof, sound tiles may go back on over new underlayment (R908.5), which the [tile underlayment guide](https://globalgreenroofing.com/roofing-guides/tile-roof-underlayment-replacement/) explains step by step. For a pitched roof that is not tile, our [metal roof vs shingle guide](https://globalgreenroofing.com/roofing-guides/metal-roof-vs-shingle/) sets the two side by side on cost, life, weight, fire rating and solar fit, and the [Class A guide](https://globalgreenroofing.com/roofing-guides/class-a-fire-rated-roofing/) explains what "as an assembly" means.

## What every Global Green roof includes

Whatever the covering, a roof only keeps water out when every layer under it is right. On a new roof or a replacement we renew the whole system:

- **Deck:** inspected after tear-off, damaged sheathing replaced before anything goes on.
- **Underlayment:** synthetic underlayment over the deck, with self-adhered membrane in valleys and around penetrations.
- **Flashing:** new drip edge, valley metal, wall and chimney flashing and pipe boots.
- **Ventilation:** balanced intake and exhaust so the attic stays cooler and the roofing lasts.
- **The covering:** shingle, tile, metal or membrane, installed to the manufacturer's instructions.
